Consider the country pub, we’ve all been to one at some point in our lives. Pints, peanuts, and a quiz machine if you’re lucky. It’s the universal leveller. We go there to rejoice, lament, catch up, rest, and maybe even figure things out, but what’s the best reason to go to the pub? You guessed correctly. It’s a wedding. The Welldiggers Arms wedding’s are absolutely brilliant.
Back in July 2021, George and Shelly had the most laid-back and enjoyable pub wedding at the Welldiggers Arms in Petworth, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The entire day was stress-free and full of affection from friends and family, who’d have guessed getting married in a pub would be that much fun?
The wedding wasn’t your traditional large white wedding, as there were only about 50 guests, plus Murphy, a four-legged furry companion, paid a special visit.
There were so many aspects of the event that I enjoyed photographing, a genuinely memorable day. It was then that George and Shelly, along with their families, challenged each other to a variety of old-fashioned pub games including horseshoe and beer pong. The Welldiggers Arms weddings are just so much fun!
I liked how the wedding combined Shelly’s and her family’s American roots with George’s and his family’s traditional English roots. The cuisine was a normal American dinner, which was, as you could have imagined, a burger but not just any burger, these were fantastic!
The “lunch special” band entertained the guests with live music, as they prepared for the main reception. They covered some fantastic classics, and I’ll be honest, when they played some of their songs, I got goosebumps. They also had a DJ for the after-party, and I’ll tell you something: he played some terrific pop tunes. What a lovely day it truly was!
Please let me photograph another pub based wedding, as it was so friendly and intimate.
